CANON
History: Wiki
Personality:
By human standards, Tavros is a pretty unexceptional thirteen year old. A little dorky, a few difficulties asserting himself, but he's got some good friends and tries to do what's right. His interests include playing games alone and with friends, reading fantasy novels, and rapping terribly. He likes spending time with his guardian, playing with pets, and horseback riding.
Now let's drop this kid into hell. Tavros Nitram is a low class citizen on a Lord of the Flies-esque planet where only the strong survive. Those lucky enough to see adulthood are taken offworld to serve Her Empress in unending war. There's no room for the weak, the timid, or the injured on Alternia, and nothing but inevitable culling awaits them. Him, probably, let's be realistic here. Or let's not-Tavros sees the world around him, then he wheels his way back inside to read a book until he feels better.
That escapist way of handling the world around him is a recurring thing. Tavros has never been good at confronting reality. Most of the time, he's all flight and no fight. He freezes up in a pinch, or even bails out entirely if he's overwhelmed. Rather than have a confrontation with someone, he'll go to great efforts to excuse their behaviour, no matter how terribly they might be acting. Murder attempts become accidents in his mind, and when he is finally killed, he later apologizes for his behaviour (in the afterlife). He even likes the lack of responsibility the afterlife offers. The kid is way too easy-going for his own good.
Which isn't to say he's a complete pushover. Tavros can be a little shit when he wants to be. He's prone to passive-aggression, is extremely persistent when he gets an idea into his head, and let's face it, more than a little socially awkward. He has a hard time expressing himself, especially under stress, and has a nasty habit of carrying his plans through bull-headedly without considering the consequences or taking into account how others are reacting. This sometimes leads to fairly dire consequences.
Thankfully, Tavros is also very resilient. For better or for worse, his childish optimism stands strong against a world that promises nothing but misery. Every time he falls, he finds his way back upright and carries on. Perhaps this is related to Tavros's desire to be a heroic figure. He has a very specific understanding of what it means to be a hero or a villain, one dictated by his fantasy novels. Tavros wishes he could be strong and free like his personal hero, Pupa Pan. Heroes don't give up, his pulpy books promise, so he doesn't either.
Speaking of heroic qualities, foremost on Tavros's mind is confidence. He's a little fixated on the subject. He looks for it everywhere and finds it in all the wrong places. Whether its through becoming fixated on an abusive (but oh so confident!) friend, or deriving it from physical changes in himself, Tavros has a long history of looking outward for a reason to respect himself. One of the big ironies of his character is that there's no way someone without confidence would be as openly pathetic as he lets himself come across. It's only when he thinks he's acquired confidence that Tavros starts acting like someone he isn't.
It's easy to mistake his patience and hesitation for cowardice, but when he's certain he's doing the right thing, Tavros isn't afraid to step up. Sometimes, it's is more important to him than his own life. For example, a long history of abuse, mind control powers, a legendary weapon, and god-tier abilities together weren't enough to dissuade him from making a futile solo attempt on the life of a "bad guy." He's got as much dumb courage as anyone. With suicidal convictions like that, it's amazing that he survived as long as he did.
Tavros is a dorky kid with a lot of potential to be the hero he idolizes. He's very much a work in progress, but he's slowly figuring out that he doesn't need to forgive every wrong, he can speak up for himself and others, and he doesn't need anyone's approval but his own. Maybe he'll get there eventually, or maybe not, but for the first time in a long time he's reached a point of some degree of self-actualization. He'll probably never stop being a weenie, but maybe he can be something else as well.
INTO THE HEDGE
Seeming: Servant
Role: Wizened Beastmaster
Abilities: Tavros was given certain abilities to better care for his master's menagerie of creatures, both Beasts and other magical monsters.
-Any order he issues to a beast carries magical weight, an impetus that is difficult to resist.
-He can reward or punish his wards at a touch, hitting them with an intense burst of pleasure or pain as desired.
-He can soothe beasts in his immediate area, making them drowsy and complacent.
-He has considerably increased size and bulk to better carry out his duties.
-A pretty solid knowledge of the basics of caring for all kinds of creatures, including basic medical treatment, cleaning, breeding, birthing, etc.
Description: Tavros came out looking more like an Ogre than your typical Wizened. His physicality had to become much more brutish to better handle the dangerous creatures of the house. He's larger than most adults, and exaggeratedly muscular, with leathery, scarred skin mottled in various greys and browns. Thankfully, his horns didn't grow in proportion to the rest of him-they remain overlarge for a young troll, but nothing compared to what he would have had if he'd grown naturally.
His other features remain unchanged. His eyes are the same orange that most living trolls have, his hair the same black, and he has the normal number of toes and fingers. It's all just bigger.
Oh, and he smells indelibly and unfortunately of every animal you've ever met.
Reasoning: Pretty straightforward. Tavros in canon can commune psychically with animals. He played games involving raising, fighting, and breeding them, imposing his will on them the whole time. He also possesses some personality traits that predispose him to that kind of work-he's patient, forgiving, and caring. He finds satisfaction in mundane tasks and is a capable rider.
I bulked him up to match his bull motifs, because it made sense to me for someone handling lethal animals to be all kinds of tough himself, and admittedly because I find gentle giant characters endearing.
MEMORIES
First Memory: Flight. He used to be able to fly, he's sure of it. And it was amazing.
Another Five:
1. Being obsessively in love with Vriska
2. Roleplay, as a concept. What a weird but appealing idea
3. Being paraplegic
4. Tinkerbull, his lusus
5. The SGRUB/SBURB players
